Philomena Lee has partnered with the Adoption Right Alliance to petition the Irish government to grant adoptees access to their records. Adoptees in the UK already have access to their identifying information at age 18, just for the asking! That is how it should be, in Ireland and in the US.
Here’s an interview with the real life Philomena Lee, subject of the film, Philomena, along with her daughter Jane and Mari Steed, the US representative of the Adoption Rights Alliance. The ARA has partnered with Philomena and Jane to create the Philomena Project to petition the government to change the policies of secrecy and deception surrounding adoption in Ireland.
I’m so pleased that a piece of art is being used in this way, to attempt to change long-stunted norms and to create humanity and raise compassion for women and children involved in Irish forced adoptions.
